Tailscale SSH and Serve: update the systems behind your website
First reported

Tailscale has released fixes following the Tailworm report, also covered by International Cyber Digest. Its investigation confirms SSH privilege-boundary problems and issues in Serve. The SSH findings require an existing foothold on a device authorized to connect; they do not let an unauthenticated internet user connect to arbitrary Tailscale SSH servers.
Who should check
Hosts using vulnerable Tailscale SSH or the Serve configurations described in the vendor bulletins. SSH Unix socket forwarding could expose root-only sockets, while a separate session-handling issue could exhaust memory. Serve has its own Unix-backend and HTTP/2 capability-handling issues. Ordinary OpenSSH over a tailnet is distinct from the built-in Tailscale SSH server.
What to do now
- Update affected hosts to Tailscale 1.104.4 or a later release containing the fixes. Verify the running daemon after deployment.
- Review SSH access and forwarding permissions. Limit production access to the users and devices that need it, and consider SSH check mode for sensitive hosts.
- If you cannot patch SSH forwarding immediately, review the vendor's TS_SSH_DISABLE_FORWARDING=1 mitigation and restart requirements. This does not fix the separate Serve or memory-exhaustion issues.
What this means for your website
The administration path to a website is part of its attack surface. A private network still needs least-privilege access, patching and review. Keep infrastructure checks alongside tests of the website's public behavior.
